Is Cape Town a safe place to travel to?

Cape Town is often perceived as unsafe due to stories you might have heard, such as warnings like, “Don’t go to South Africa; you’ll get robbed!” However, this doesn’t paint the full picture. In reality, Cape Town and many other areas in South Africa are generally safe for travellers who exercise caution. While there are occasional reports that might suggest otherwise, safety largely depends on being aware of your surroundings and avoiding risky situations. With mindfulness and care, you can enjoy what Cape Town has to offer. When going out in the evening or at night, it’s best to take a cab both to your destination and back to your accommodation. Cabs in South Africa are very affordable and provide a safer way to travel. Avoid wandering alone in the dark. For hiking, we followed the advice to hike during the day. In September, the daytime temperatures were pleasant and made hiking comfortable. It’s safer to avoid hiking alone at sunrise or sunset. As a couple, we also chose not to hike very early or late, as we didn’t feel completely comfortable doing so. If you’re eager on hiking at sunrise or sunset, the safest option is to join a group.

Cape Town is a perfect place to visit with its great variety in natural beauty, diverse activities and vibrant food scene. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots and get ready to fall in love with the Mother City!
